Heart mainly caused when A myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood flow decreases or stops in one of the coronary arteries of the heart, causing infarction (tissue death) to the heart muscle. The most common symptom is chest pain or discomfort which may travel into the shoulder, arm, back, neck or jaw. Often such pain occurs in the center or left side of the chest and lasts for more than a few minutes. The discomfort may occasionally feel like heartburn.

A heart attack occurs when one or more coronary arteries get blocked. Over time, a coronary artery can narrow due to the build-up of various substances, including cholesterol (atherosclerosis). This condition is called coronary artery disease. During a heart attack, one of these plaques can rupture and spill cholesterol and other substances into the bloodstream. A blood clot forms at the site of the rupture. Bigger clots can completely block the flow of blood through the coronary artery.
